Worth it!

I have been raising meat chicks for 5 or 6 years now and could never "justify" spending the money on a brooder....All i can say is i wish i had got one sooner. Absolutely worth it.

Good so far

Bought this for quail chicks. I put this in my unheated garage. I bought a welding blanket from harbor freight to cover to help insulate.. has been working good and holds temp.

Great once we ironed out the hiccups

I really like these brooders! It took us a little while to get the kinks ironed out though. The first one we ordered had a defective heater that fluctuated a lot and then stopped working altogether, but GQF sent a new one out no questions asked when I contacted them. The second one got a little dented in the cover and litter tray during shipping, but not enough to impact functionality. A feed sack trimmed and cut open does work as a tray liner, but so far I found the easiest and most effective liner is a roll of 30" wide kraft paper that I ordered online -- I cut 38" lengths and those fit in the tray nicely (without sticking up and making it difficult to replace the tray the way a feed sack can). For the first three or four days, I put the food and water trays inside the brooder instead of hanging on the outside, so that they could understand where food and water was. That way, once I stepped up to hanging them on the outside, it was an easy transition (and they were big enough to not escape out the openings to the troughs).

I do think the manufacturer is too optimistic in their numbers of chicks that the brooder can accommodate (at least for meat birds). I have 48 heritage meat chicks (they get to be butcher weight in 12-14 weeks, so slower growing than a Cornish cross) in each brooder that are just turning 2 weeks old and it is pretty crowded-- I definitely could not have all of them in one brooder! However, I am overall very happy with this investment.
